Remembering Carl Schools

CARL SCHOOLS OBITUARY

Schools, Carl S.
CHATHAM - Carl S. Schools died peacefully at Albany Medical Center on March 9, 2023, at the age of 69, with his beloved wife holding his hand.
He was born on April 14, 1953, to Henry Knitt Schools and Frances (Phillips) Schools. Carl attended Ichabod Crane Central Schools and moved to Texas shortly after where he then traveled the world for Henderson Limited based in Dallas. Carl moved back to New York in 2000 and joined the family real estate business, Old Ghent Realty, started by his mother Frances in 1974.
Carl enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, and anything that involved nature. Carl's real love was his grandchildren; attending their sporting events, and simply watching them grow. He was incredibly proud of them all.
He was predeceased by his parents. Carl is survived by his wife, Pamela Herzing of Chatham; his son, Philip (Brittany) Schools of Chatham; his stepdaughters, Tammy (Keith) Crawford of Valatie and Sandra (Stuart) Flavin of Ghent; his siblings, Timothy (Cindy) Schools of Feura Bush, Beverly Kipp of Elizaville, and Jon David Schools of Ghent; his grandchildren, Parker and Jameson Schools; and he was also Papa to Timothy Crawford, Brady and Griffin Reardon, and Reyna Jackson, all of whom he loved like his own. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff and all auxiliary staff at Albany Medical Center for their compassion and understanding during Carl's final days.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Kozel's Restaurant in Ghent on Saturday, March 18, at 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to share a story about Carl is welcome to do so.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Chatham Little League at P.O. Box 340, Ghent, NY, 12075, to help provide free programs and clinics to our local youngsters.

Remembering Frances

May 3, 1929 - July 22, 2020

This is out of my comfort zone doing something so publicly, but this is for you.

“You have gone away and taken a big piece of my heart.

You are the only person I have slept in a hospital bed with (too many times). You are the only person I have cut toenails for (also too many times). You are the only person I have crashed a wedding with (I won’t mention it again). You are the only one I did so many things with. You taught me to be a great real estate agent. You taught me to be a great leader. You taught me to find beauty in everything. You taught me to have faith when it was hard to find. I will leave this for you so that you have it forever... Because of you I have asthma. Because of you I will always have great platters and bowls. Because of you I will never be rich. Because of you I love unconditionally. Because of you I will never be skinny. Because of you I will always have big arms. Because of you nothing shocks me. Because of you I raised a pretty awesome son. Because of you I will always be married. Because of you I am a workaholic. Because of you I will always want to help people. Because of you I will always simply do what needs to be done. Because of you I have an ability to listen and advise. Because of you I have furniture. Because of you I will always be kind. I am so thankful that you were my grandmother.

Your last words to me were I love you, but I love you more.”

- Tammy Crawford

Frances Schools Obituary

Frances Phillips Schools was born on May 3, 1929 in Hudson, NY to Maude Mugford and Byron Phillips.

She had a mind of her own right from the start and talked often of how much trouble she was to her poor mother.

She was blessed with 3 siblings - Margaret who tried to rule the roost, Nancy who was perfect unless you stole her homework or her laid out clothes for the day and, when she was 8, her little brother Barry who she spoiled until his lovely wife Cilene took him off to Australia. She suffered the loss of her father at age 10 and missed him and his brilliant mind her whole life.

Frances was a girl who loved books, learning, music, people, family, God and laughter.

She loved being on the creek and hanging out with her sisters and friends.

She knew what she wanted most was to be a wife and mother but, even as a child, she was called to selling.

At 6 she sold seeds or garden vegetables up and down the street to make money.

As a young mother she sold World Book Encyclopedia so that she could get the free set.

She graduated from Kinderhook School at the tender age of 16 and went to work for the state -a job she hated.

In 1948 she married Henry Knitt Schools and they started a family.

Timmy, Bevy, Carl and Jon filled her days with cooking and sewing, camping and homework help.

She and Henry shared their passion for learning with the kids and exposed them to hard work, life lessons, a strong faith and lots of fun.

Their extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins made for many holiday gatherings and enough love to last forever.

Frances was baptized in the Hudson Methodist Church and went on to play the piano and organ at Stuyvesant Falls Dutch Reformed Church where she was also a very active member holding many roles of leadership.

She would only work when her kids were in school so she was a waitress for many years at Kozel's Restaurant where she formed lifelong friendships with the family.

She believed in hard work and did what she had to. She sewed, took in laundry, served the community and helped anyone who needed it.

She made food for Election Day, coached Little League, rang bells for the Salvation Army and bought a Hot Dog Bus which she loved.

She took care of her mother and grandmother and Hank's parents as well, believing it was the most important thing she could do with her time and teach her children.

The house was filled with books and music, sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews and anyone who wanted to sit and drink Coke with her.

As her children grew and flew the nest she went into Real Estate, first with Irving Price in Hudson and then opening Old Ghent Realty in The Bartlett House in Ghent.

She loved real estate and became a preeminent leader in the field. Each of her kids worked with her in the beginning. As her business prowess grew, and her reputation with it, family, her coworkers and her trusted and treasured secretary, all helped move the business to become a highly respected force in Columbia and surrounding counties. Old Ghent Realty is carried on by sons Timothy and Carl, long time Broker Pam, and Cindy and Sam who lends her creative talent to all advertising and publications.

She took great pride in selling houses here. She also treasured the people she met along the way and the friends who continued to be a part of her life, celebrating birthdays and sitting on the porch to reminisce and visit.

In 1968 the journey of being a grandmother began and she, along with Henry, welcomed each grandchild with open arms cherishing them for who they were. They appreciated each ones talents and skills, interests and later, careers. They went to recitals and ball games, graduations and weddings. They supported them through divorces and step kids who they loved equally. Their grandchildren celebrated life with them and sat at their bedsides when they passed, Poppy in 1999 and Gramma Frannie on July 22nd.

Frances will be remembered for her generosity of spirit and resources, her work ethic and her dedication to her family and community.

She died peacefully surrounded by loved ones who each got to whisper their devotion and love in her ear.

She will be missed but our memories of her will bring more laughter than tears.

Thank you for all you gave to others, Frances. Thank you from all of us.

Terms of Endearment

The Two Of Us Productions, the award winning theater company based in Columbia County NY, is pleased to present TERMS OF ENDEARMENT by Dan Gordon.

Challenges in life and love test the resilience of a mother-daughter relationship in Dan Gordon’s adaption of TERMS OF ENDEARMENT from the Oscar-winning screenplay by James L. Brooks and Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Larry McMurtry. Though Emma is often exasperated by her highly-opinionated mother Aurora, they talk every day about their problems, from Aurora finding unexpected love even as she becomes a reluctant grandmother, to Emma’s struggle with her troubled marriage. But when they need one another most, will they be able to find the courage in each other? This funny and touching
story captures the delicate, sometimes fractured bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lovers, both old and new.

Lake Street Dive-Style Jazz-Pop

Rachael & Vilray perform the same sort of vintage, mid-20th century jazzy pop familiar to fans of Rachael’s jazzy, soulful pop outfit Lake Street Dive.

Rachael Price and Vilray met at the New England Conservatory of Music in fall 2003 and became friends. Their duo grew from a shared reverence for the pop music of the 1930s and ‘40s and its wide range of emotions. With simple arrangements and only a guitar for accompaniment, they perform original works and revive forgotten gems of the jazz big bands and Western swing ensembles. Their sound recalls both the warmth of radio’s golden age and the intimacy of parlor concerts in a time before recordings.

Bindlestiff Cirkus Cabin Fever Cabaret

Adult Oriented Show – Hudson’s own Bindlestiff Family Cirkus continues its wintertime tradition of hosting a monthly cabaret, featuring a variety of circus, theater, comedy and musical entertainers. Each month this winter, Bindlestiff Cirkus will bring a new lineup, with acts including trapeze, contortion, acrobatic balance, sword swallowing, juggling, physical comedy, and oddball novelty turns. The Bindlestiff stage is one of the few arenas in the world where attendees may see internationally renowned street performers, featured acts from Cirque du Soleil and Ringling Brothers, and artists from “America’s Got Talent” next to local legends, live, on stage, and in the same show.

Live music is a defining feature of Bindlestiff’s cabaret shows, with witty, original tunes by a variety of NYC’s best composers and accompanists. Bindlestiff’s unique style reflects deep roots in NYC’s underground club scene, nods to political street theater, and a steady respect for the traditions of American popular entertainment and illegitimate theater.

Jazz Supergroup

PREVITE/SAFT/CLINE
A powerful new trio of master musicians reveling in a sonic landscape created out of thin air.

Bobby Previte is a composer and performer whose work explores the nexus between notated and improvised music. One of the seminal figures of the 80s New York ‘Downtown’ scene, Previte has received multiple awards for music composition, most recently the Greenfield Prize for Music and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He leads a plethora of ensembles from his instrument, the drums. including Blueprints—projected/conducted historical fragments, Rhapsody— acoustic song cycle, Mass—metal + medieval, Terminals—concertos for soloist and So Percussion. “His ensembles speak in visionary tongues.”—The New Yorker

Jamie Saft is a virtuoso pianist, keyboardist, producer, and composer from New York. His stylistic versatility, multi-instrumentalist capabilities, and production skills have been featured with Beastie Boys, Bad Brains, HR, The B-52’s, John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Donovan, Antony and the Johnsons, and Iggy Pop. Saft leads the New Zion Trio, The Jamie Saft Trio, and The Jamie Saft Quartet.

Guitar explorer Nels Cline is best known these days as the lead guitarist in the band Wilco. His recording and performing career — spanning jazz, rock, punk and experimental — is well into its fourth decade, with over 200 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. Cline has received many accolades including Rolling Stone anointing him as both one of 20 “new guitar gods” and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time (which is, of course, completely absurd).

A CHRISTMAS CAROL, by Charles Dickens

FREE ADMISSION!

 · Hosted by Walking the dog Theater of Ghent, NY

Presenting 3 performances of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at Solaris, 360 Warren St. in Hudson.

Info From The Columbia County Tourism website https://columbiacountytourism.org/events/

Admission is free as part of WTD’s Free Culture Initiative, which seeks to make the experience of live theater available to all; donations in support of this initiative are gratefully received. The Hudson performances are part of a tour that includes communities in NY, CT, and MO in December and several cities in China and Taiwan in the New Year. The theater’s Executive Artistic Director David Anderson, who performs the piece solo (moving fluidly from character to character) says of the project, “A Christmas Carol has become an annual tradition in many communities, and it is the best way I know to become inspired by the season.”

Through drama and masterful storytelling, Anderson performs the story exactly as Dickens wrote it, giving the audience not only the dialogue but the descriptive passages as well. Anderson’s rendition, directed by Ted Pugh, is a modern revival of Dickens’ own manner of storytelling. Dickens gave performances drawn from A Christmas Carol and The Pickwick Papers throughout the Northeastern United States, from his arrival in Boston in mid-November, 1867 to his return to England in April 1868. Walking the dog Theater’s production, now in its 12th year, received high praises from Bruce Hallenbeck of The Independent, who wrote of David Anderson’s performance, “Amazing one-man show. . .what Dickens intended all along!”

Walking the dog Theater, Inc. is a professional not-for-profit theater company based in Columbia County, NY. Santa Parade on Christmas Eve

Public Event

· Hosted by Valatie, New York

Info From The Valatie NY Facebook Page

In the very village (Valatie) where Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas, of “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus” fame spent her last days; the little girl who was looking for the spirit of Christmas and the existence of Santa, found them both, alive and well, in Valatie, New York. Each Christmas Eve, Santa himself visits the homes of little children—courtesy of the Valatie Santa Claus Club.

This year’s (2018) schedule is courtesy of NORAD and the Valatie Santa Claus Club:

**Valatie Christmas Eve** Santa Parade Route:
Beginning at 3:30 at the Valatie Rescue Squad up Rt 9 to River Street—then up Main St. to Route 203—to Little Falls to Mazel Court—out Genesee Drive back onto 203—to Bell Lane to Rod & Gun Club Road—back onto 203 to Main Street to Upper Main Street—back to New Street to Mechanic Street back around New Street to Holly Hills entering at Peters Lane to Marion Blvd to Church Street to Williams Street to Luther Street to Lake St to Main—to Route 9 to Rathbone Ave—to Ridge Drive back to Route 9 to Albany Ave—back to Route 9, ending at Valatie Rescue Squad.

Santa’s parade begins every Christmas Eve at 3:30 pm with his journey down the village streets to the classic tune of ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’.

Soon afterward, he visits Valatian children age ten and under in their homes, calling each by name and delivering boxes of gifts.

The Valatie Santa Claus Club was established after World War II, in 1946 by fifteen area men to provide gifts for the poor.

To infuse Christmas spirit to village orphans, the men donated funds from their Army separation pay, providing gifts on Christmas Eve for the children. Thus began the first Santa Claus Club in the nation here in Valatie.

This effort is greatly appreciated by local residents, who support the Club enthusiastically, making this a true community event. Our concept has been adopted by other communities throughout the country as well as internationally.

Come and join our parade this Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas to All!
